Tip Calculator

Tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)

How Tip Calculations Work

A tip is a gratuity added on top of a service bill, most commonly at restaurants. In the United States, tipping 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for sit-down dining. The basic formula is: tip amount = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100). If your meal costs $100 and you want to leave a 20% tip, the math is $100 × 0.20 = $20, bringing your total to $120.

When dining with a group, you often need to split the bill evenly. Divide the tip by the number of people to find each person's share of the gratuity, and divide the total (bill plus tip) by the head count for the amount each diner pays. For a $100 bill with a $20 tip split four ways, each person contributes $5 in tip and $30 overall ($120 ÷ 4).

Tip percentages vary by service quality and local customs. Standard benchmarks are 15% for acceptable service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for excellent service. Some diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the post-tax total — both approaches are common, though pre-tax tipping is technically the traditional method.

Quick mental math shortcuts help at the table. To find 10% of any bill, move the decimal one place left. Double that for 20%, or add half of 10% to get 15%. For a $85 check, 10% is $8.50, so 20% is $17 and 15% is $12.75. Rounding to the nearest dollar is also fine — leaving $17 on an $85 bill is effectively a 20% tip.

This calculator handles all the arithmetic for you: enter the bill amount, choose or type a tip percentage, and specify how many people are splitting. It returns the tip, the grand total, and the per-person breakdown so you can settle up quickly without pulling out pen and paper at the end of a meal.

Frequently asked questions

Either is acceptable, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach. Many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity — the difference is usually small.

In the U.S., 15% is a baseline for adequate service, 18% is common for good service, and 20% or more shows appreciation for excellent service.

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. Each person's share equals (bill + tip) ÷ number of diners.
