Pace = time ÷ distance

How Running Pace Is Calculated

Pace expresses how long it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. The core relationship links distance, time, and pace: pace = time ÷ distance. Speed is the inverse: speed = distance ÷ time. Runners think in pace (slower = higher minutes); cyclists and drivers often think in speed (km/h or mph). Converting between them keeps training plans consistent.

The classic example: running 5 km in 25 minutes. Pace = 25 min ÷ 5 km = 5 min/km, written as 5:00/km. In seconds per km: 5 × 60 = 300 sec/km. Speed = 5 km ÷ (25/60) hr = 12 km/h. For a half marathon (21.1 km) at 5:00/km pace, total time = 21.1 × 5 = 105.5 minutes, or about 1 hour 46 minutes. Breaking a race into per-kilometer splits helps you avoid starting too fast.

To convert min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.60934 (km per mile). A 5:00/km pace equals 5 × 1.609 ≈ 8:03/mile. Conversely, divide min/mile by 1.609 to get min/km. A 7:00/mile pace is 7 ÷ 1.609 ≈ 4:21/km — substantially faster than it sounds to metric-trained runners.

Negative splits — running the second half faster than the first — are a proven race strategy. If you target 50 minutes for 10 km (5:00/km average), aim for 25:30 in the first 5 km (5:06/km) and 24:30 in the second (4:54/km). Pace calculators also help translate treadmill settings: 10 km/h equals 6:00/km pace because 60 min ÷ 10 km = 6 min/km.

Enter any two of distance, time, and pace to solve for the third. Use the results to set interval workout targets, predict race finish times, or compare treadmill speed with outdoor GPS pace from your watch.

Frequently asked questions

Divide total time by distance. For 5 km in 25 minutes: 25 ÷ 5 = 5 min/km (5:00/km pace).

Multiply min/km by 1.609. A 5:00/km pace equals about 8:03/mile. Divide min/mile by 1.609 to go the other direction.

Many beginners finish 5K between 6:00–7:30 per km (30–38 minutes total). Consistency matters more than speed early on.
