Final Grade Calculator
Required final = (desired − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
How Final Grade Calculations Work
The final grade calculator solves one of the most common end-of-semester questions: "What do I need on the final to get an A, B, or C?" Your course grade combines everything completed so far with the final exam, weighted according to your syllabus. The formula is: required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.
Imagine your current course average is 85% and the final is worth 30% of your grade. To finish with a 90% (A-), you need: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%. Since no score exceeds 100%, an A- is mathematically impossible — the calculator flags this so you can set realistic targets. To earn a B (83%), you need (83 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 78.3% on the final — very achievable.
The final's weight dramatically affects how much leverage you have. With a 20% final, even a perfect 100% adds only 20 percentage points to your weighted total. With a 50% final, the exam essentially determines half your grade — strong preparation is critical. Students with high current averages and low final weights often need only modest final scores to maintain their standing.
Some instructors use letter-grade targets rather than exact percentages. Standard cutoffs map A to 93%, B to 83%, and C to 73%. The calculator accepts either format and converts as needed. If your desired grade is impossible given your current average, consider whether extra credit opportunities exist or adjust expectations to the best achievable outcome.
| Letter Grade | Percent Range | GPA Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 93–100% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90–92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80–82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70–72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69% | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66% | 1.0 |
| D- | 60–62% | 0.7 |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 |
Enter your current course percentage (or letter grade), the final exam weight, and your desired final grade to see the exact score required. Knowing this number early in finals week lets you prioritize study time across multiple courses strategically.

Frequently asked questions
That target grade is mathematically impossible with your current average. The calculator marks it as not achievable so you can set a realistic goal.
Use the Grade Calculator with your completed assignment scores and category weights. Enter that percentage here as your current average.
Not automatically. If you expect extra credit points, add them to your current average before calculating, or treat them as a buffer above the required score.
