How Countdown Timers Work
A countdown measures the remaining time from now until a target date and time. The calculation subtracts the current moment from the target datetime, yielding a duration in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. If the target is in the past, the result is negative — showing how long ago the event occurred instead.
Example: today is June 11, 2026 at 2:00 PM and the target is December 25, 2026 at 12:00 AM (midnight Christmas morning). From June 11 14:00 to December 25 00:00: June has 19 days left (30 − 11), plus full months July (31) + August (31) + September (30) + October (31) + November (30) + December 25 days = 197 days. Subtract 14 hours from the partial day: 197 days − 14 hours = 196 days and 10 hours. That is 4,714 hours, or roughly 28.3 weeks.
Precision matters for short countdowns. To New Year's Eve at midnight from December 31 at 6:00 PM: 6 hours exactly. Adding a specific time to a date-only target assumes midnight (00:00:00) unless specified — "January 1" as a target typically means the start of that day. For event starts at 7:30 PM, include the time to avoid a 19.5-hour error.
